With two symphony concerts on 28th and 29th September, Alexander Liebreich conducts the Staatskappelle Weimar in a program featuring Pavel Haas’ Study for String orchestra, Beethoven’s 1st Symphony, and culminating in Zemlinsky’s shimmering orchestral fantasy “Die Seejungfrau”, which is based on the Andersen classic fairy tale, The Little Mermaid.
Like Pavel Haas, Liebreich’s family has Jewish roots in Brno, Moravia. Haas’ Study for String Orchestra was premiered in Terezín in 1943 by conductor Karel Ancerl. Liebreich succeeded this conductor in his function as chief conductor at Czech Radio in Prague from 2018 to 2022. “As President of the Richard Strauss Society, I am fascinated by the collaboration with this orchestra, which has premiered groundbreaking works by the Munich composer, Don Juan, Macbeth and Death and Transfiguration”, says Alexander Liebreich.
