Alexander Liebreich has been appointed Chief Conductor of the Taipei Symphony Orchestra (TSO) and will officially take up his position in the 2026 season, parallel to his duties as Music Director of the Orquestra de Valencia in Spain, which he has held since 2022.
His appointment is a continuation of a collaboration which began in 2008 between Alexander Liebreich and the Taiwan’s leading orchestra, driven by a musical affinity forged over the years. Starting in 2026 and following on from maestro Eliahu Inbal’s tenure, the orchestra partners with its new maestro for a three-year term, leading the TSO in its continuous pursuit of excellence.
Among the highlights of their first season together, a grand season opening concert will celebrate Alexander Liebreich’s inauguration, featuring Lisa Bathiasvili and Gauthier Capuçon who will present the world premiere of the new piece of French-Chinese composer Qigang Chen.
In addition to the season’s symphonic concerts which will also include leading international soloists Piotr Anderszewski, Paul Lewis, cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras, violinist Sergey Khachatryan, as well as soprano Chen Reiss and baritone Michael Nagy, Alexander Liebreich and the TSO will also be presenting a staged production of Richard Wagner’s opera Tristan und Isolde.
“It is personally meaningful to me to have received the democratic consensus of the TSO and its musicians for the position of chief conductor, especially given my 17-year relationship with the orchestra”, says Liebreich. “I have had the pleasure of performing many outstanding concerts with them, which remain deeply engraved in my memory. I am thrilled to embark on this new musical journey with the TSO.”
Under Liebreich’s baton, TSO plans to broaden its programming, foster international partnerships, and cultivate emerging musical talent.
